چکیده

Extensions of a previously presented Landau-de Gennes type liquid crystalline phase transition model for the direct isotropic/smectic-A (lamellar) a phase transition to the direct isotropic/smectic-C (tilted lamellar) transition are studied. Two different proposed extensions to the model are studied both in the context of ideal ordering (point volume) and full three-dimensional uniaxial scalar/vector decomposition. Recommendations based upon the inclusion of essential physics and computational feasibility are made, distinguishing each of the two proposed extensions based upon these criteria. Additionally, it is found that the approach used for the isotropic/smectic-A model to deterministically compute phase diagram data is not possible for either of the two proposed isotropic/smecticC models.

Nonionic diethanolamide amphiphiles with unsaturated C18 hydrocarbon chains: thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior.

The neat and lyotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior of three nonionic diethanolamide amphiphiles with C18 hydrocarbon chains containing one, two or three unsaturated bonds has been examined. This has allowed the effect of degree of unsaturation on the phase behavior of diethanolamide amphiphiles to be investigated. Neat linoleoyl and linolenoyl diethanolamide undergo a transition from a gl...

Thermodynamics, transition dynamics, and texturing in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals with mesogens exhibiting a direct isotropic/smectic-A transition

Experimental studies of phase equilibrium and growth morphologies of novel polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) mixtures of PS (polystyrene) and liquid crystals that exhibit a direct isotropic/smecticA (lamellar) mesophase transition were performed for PS/10CB (decyl-cyanobiphenyl) and PS/12CB (dodecyl-cyanobiphenyl). The studies were performed using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and di...

Unusual sequences of tilted smectic phases in liquid crystals of bent-shape molecules.

The first theoretical description of the experimentally often-observed isotropic-polar smectic phase transitions of symmetric and asymmetric bent-shape molecules is presented. The isotropic-tilted polar smectic phase transition requires a coupling among three types of ordering processes: polar packing, director tilt, and layer ordering. For explaining the unusual triclinic-monoclinic phase tran...

Modelling elasticity and memory effects in liquid crystalline elastomers by molecular dynamics simulations

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid crystal elastomer of side-chain architecture. The network is formed from a melt of 28 molecules each having a backbone of 100 hydrocarbon monomers, to which 50 side chains are attached in a syndiotactic way. Crosslinking is performed in the smectic A phase. We observe an increase of the smectic–isotropic phase transition temperature of abo...

Biaxial mesophase behavior of amphiphilic anisometric colloids: a simulation study.

The phase behavior of amphiphilic anisometric particles is explored using Monte Carlo simulations. The particles are composed of two incompatible laterally attached units: a spherocylinder and a spheroplatelet. A liquid crystalline phase polymorphism is obtained including biaxial nematic, (quasi long range biaxial) calamitic smectic-A, biaxial lamellar and columnar phases. The simulation result...
